Jelly Bean Fabrics

Just another WordPress weblog

It is looking like an amazing day out at the beach. Saturday Market is up and the city of Ilwaco is bustling with people.

I just got back from two days in PDX and brought home all sorts of goodies. I feel like I should be singing that song from the Little Mermaid,

I’ve got Patterns, and Templates a’plenty.

I got Books and Notions galore,

You want Green Products, I’ve got more!

Ok, seriously.

New stuff all over the place,

and I have the entire line of Keiv by Elizabeth Studios. Beautiful doesn’t come close to describing this fabric.

Time for Sunshine…

And here I had thought last month was cold — time to get the powers-that-be to turn up the thermostat! Although, the sun is out longer and coming in at a different angle than in winter. It comes in my skylights all afternoon making the store even lighter and brighter. Sometimes I wish I were a kitty and could follow the sunbeam across the store all day.

I started working on my website and ended up totally overhauling it. I also added a few important pages – I have a gallery of pictures for you to check out, and soon there will be a web store where you can shop and sign up for classes.

I can hardly believe that my Halloween fabrics are already arriving; Jelly Beans’ first day open was last Halloween, and here we are already getting ready for the next one! I have some great Alexander Henry bolts in and more (glow in the dark!!) coming. They are perfect to make pillowcases for Trick-or-Treating loot bags. And get ready for snowmen, because before the end of May my winter collection will already be starting to arrive. .

Green Tip of the Month

This month try making a plastic shopping bag sleeve.

You can even throw it in the car when it is full and reuse the bags you have stored in the sleeve.

Springing into April

April seems to be a bit chilly out here with hail last week and ice on the car this morning. The mild winter was nice, but I am ready for spring. I look forward to the bright colors of nature inspiring my color choices as the world starts blooming.

I have batiks, batiks and more batiks coming in this spring from Avlyn and Princess Mirah. Enchanted Journey Batiks are coming in next month. (There’s a great free project sheet on that website!)

Green Tip of the Month

Check out my blog to get your pattern for a Coffee Cup Cozy.

http://jellybeanfabrics.com/blog/?p=18

Bring Green to your quilting. I have bamboo/cotton blend fabrics in and they are magnificent and reasonably priced at $6.00 a yard. Also I have recently discovered that the Fabric Freedom batiks I already have and Avlyn batiks are fair-trade batiks.

Last month’s news was bounced back to me by my server so here is a recap if you haven’t seen the news on Facebook or my blog:

We donated 31 pillowcases to the Pacific and Wakiakium County Foster Care program. Thank you to all who participated. A goody bag was awarded to Beverly Wakeman. She said it may be the second time she has ever won anything. Congrats Beverly and thanks to all who participated.

I have been busy buying and meeting new vendors this month. You may have met my husband Justin while I was gone. You can meet him every Sunday from now on. Our summer hours started today – we will now be open every day of the week.

For an easy stocking stuffer or anytime present make a coffee cup cozy and put a gift card in it. Any reusable gift reminds your friend of you when they use it.

You need:

  • Scraps
  • A tie of some kind, ric rac, elastic, etc
  • A button
  • Batting

Start by downloading the pattern: HERE

Tape your pattern together. Notice the overlap in the pattern for easy placement.

Cutting

Sew your scraps together to build a single unit for the front. Cut out pattern.

The back – I got lucky and found a pre-quilted scrap.

Choose a single piece of fabric larger than the pattern quilt the wrong side to the batting. Cut out pattern from quilted section.

The Gift Card Pocket

Cut two square 3″ x 2.75″

Sewing

Using the pocket squares:

Sew together both long sides and ONE short side using a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Clip corners.

Turn pocket right side out.   Press.

Now layer

  • Outside right side up
  • Pocket open seams matching bottom of cup cozy
  • Insert Tie with end hanging out
  • Backing Right side down

Sew BOTH Long sides and ONE short side -> Sew the side with the tie in it.

The other short side sew like this:

You are leaving a hole to turn your project inside out.

Clip corners, turn right side out and press. Pin open seam shut.

Your pocket is still loose. Using a decorative stitch sew the side edges down of the pocket.

Using different stitches and threads choose edges of fabric or through the middle of one -  as I did in the red section. This gives it the “Crazy Quilt” look and feel and quilts the cozy all at the same time.

Finishing:

You can sew the hole shut by hand, but you can also use 007 powder.

Tear off a piece of freezer paper and heat up you iron.

Pour a little bit of powder into your seam – it is a bad picture but you can see the bit of white crystals.

Fold freezer paper wax side down over your seam and press.

Add a button and you are all done.

Not only did you go green by using scraps you are no longer in need of a cardboard cozy.

I have been looking at making a one block wonder quilt.

This convinces me I am missing out.

An afternoon project from start to finish.

I started this quilt after noon today, and it is already finished. Perfect for big prints this pattern also has more layouts for the locations of the boxes.
